Description
A Wren at Meersbrook Park
Meersbrook Park in Sheffield used to be our local dog walking park until we moved house, and we still return to it from time to time. It’s always busy with garden birds moving between the hedgerows and the wooded edges. Wrens are common there, along with blue tits, robins, and blackbirds, but common doesn’t necessarily mean easy to photograph!
I’d been trying to get a decent photo of a wren for a long time. They’re tiny, fast, and they spend most of their time hidden in undergrowth rather than sitting out where you can actually see them properly. Every time I thought I had one lined up, it would dart back into a hedge before I got the camera focused, and I’d be left with another blurry shot of a bush.
Finally Cooperating
In spring 2026, I finally had some luck. This wren came out into the open and stayed there, singing loudly, for long enough that I could get a clean, sharp shot.
Britain’s Loudest Small Bird
Wrens are among the smallest birds in Britain, rivalling the goldcrest for the title, but their song is completely out of proportion to their size. They’re one of the loudest birds you’ll hear in a British garden or hedgerow, often how you know one is nearby before you ever spot it. Despite being common across Sheffield and the rest of the UK, their skulking habits mean they’re heard far more often than they’re seen.
The Painting Process
Working in my Sheffield home studio, I painted this piece in oils on a 6×6″ Ampersand Gessobord panel. At this size, getting the level of detail right while keeping the bird as the clear focal point took some care, there’s a lot packed into a very small bird.
Framed or Unframed
Choose framed at checkout and it arrives ready to hang. The frame is natural ayous, a pale, lightweight hardwood, with a 7mm face and 21mm depth. The panel sits inside it with a 5mm gap all round, so the painted edge of the panel stays visible and the picture floats inside the frame rather than sitting flush against it. That adds about 12mm to each side. A flush mount is already fitted to the back for hanging.
If you would rather choose your own framing, buy it unframed. For advice please refer to How to Frame a Painting on a Panel.
