Description
A Peak District Red Stag
We were walking at White Edge near Longshaw in autumn 2025 when we spotted a single stag from a distance. That felt like a good result on its own. Then we came around a bend and found a herd of around 30. The biggest stag stood his ground and faced us for a while before leading the herd off down the hillside. The light was good, and I came away with exactly the reference I needed.
Red deer are the largest wild land animal in the UK. The stags are most visible during the autumn rut, when they compete through sheer presence and the occasional confrontation. White Edge and the Longshaw Estate are within easy reach of Sheffield, and one of the more reliable spots in the Peak District for seeing them at close range during the season.
If you prefer the original painting, it’s still available here.
