The Parent in the Garden
While the fox cubs played in our neighbour’s Sheffield garden that afternoon, one of their parents stayed close by. I’d been focused on photographing the cubs, but at one point I noticed the adult fox standing back a short distance, watching me intently. That’s where this third painting in the series came from.
Same Day, Different Subject
The cubs were hard to ignore — they were constantly moving and there were good photos everywhere. But the adult had a different quality to it: still and alert, keeping an eye on things while the cubs got on with their playing. Protect came from one of those shots.
The Painting
Working in my Sheffield home studio, I painted Protect in a single session using oils on an 8×8″ Ampersand Gessobord panel. It’s the third in a trio with Pounce and Pause.
