Description
Heron at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Sheffield
Grey herons are one of the largest wild birds seen regularly in the UK, with a wingspan that can reach 175 cm. They are found wherever there is still or slow-moving water — rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and garden ponds — and Sheffield’s river valleys and parkland reservoirs support a healthy population year-round. Despite their size, they can be easy to miss when standing motionless among reeds or at the edge of a bank. The hunched posture — sometimes held for many minutes at a time — makes them look prehistoric.
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet
I spotted this heron at the millpond behind Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet in Beauchief, Sheffield, in spring 2025. The hamlet is one of the best-preserved water-powered industrial sites in the world — a Grade I listed complex of workshops and workers’ housing built on the River Sheaf. The four-acre dam that once powered the grinding wheels is still in place, and the water attracts wildlife year-round. The heron was on the far bank when I noticed it, already completely still. It stayed there for some time.
The Painting Process
Working in my Sheffield home studio, I completed this piece in a single painting session using oils on a 6 × 6 inch Ampersand Gessobord panel. The long neck and subtle blue-grey plumage require careful tonal work at this scale, but the stillness of the pose worked in my favour — there is a lot to look at without the composition needing to do much work.
Framed or Unframed
Choose the framed option and it arrives ready to hang. The frame is natural ayous, a pale, lightweight hardwood, with a 7mm face and 21mm depth. The panel sits inside it with a 5mm gap all round, so the painted edge of the panel stays visible and the picture appears to float inside the frame rather than sitting against it. A flush mount is already fitted to the back for hanging.
If you would rather choose your own frame, you can buy it unframed. For advice please refer to How to Frame a Painting on a Panel.
