Description
A Sheffield Garden Great Tit
Great tits are common in Sheffield gardens, but they don’t usually sit still for long. This one was different. I photographed it in my back garden in summer 2025, and it stayed put in the midday sun, turning to give me several different poses before flying off.
I ended up with a good selection of reference photos. The pose I chose shows the bird side-on, with the bold black head stripe and yellow breast that make great tits one of the most recognisable British birds.
About the Great Tit
The great tit is the largest member of the tit family in the UK and a year-round resident across Sheffield. They’re common at garden feeders, where they tend to push smaller species like blue tits and coal tits out of the way. Their two-note “teacher-teacher” call is one of the first birdsongs most people learn.
The Painting Process
Working in my Sheffield home studio, I created this piece in a single painting session using oils on a 6 × 6 inch Ampersand Gessobord panel. The midday light in the reference photo gave clear, direct lighting on the bird, which suited a simple composition.
Framed or Unframed
Choose the framed option and it arrives ready to hang. The frame is natural ayous, a pale, lightweight hardwood, with a 7mm face and 21mm depth. The panel sits inside it with a 5mm gap all round, so the painted edge of the panel stays visible and the picture appears to float inside the frame rather than sitting against it. A flush mount is already fitted to the back for hanging.
If you would rather choose your own frame, you can buy it unframed. For advice please refer to How to Frame a Painting on a Panel.
