Description
Framed or Unframed
Choose the framed option and it arrives ready to hang. The frame is natural ayous, a pale, lightweight hardwood, with a 7mm face and 21mm depth. The panel sits inside it with a 5mm gap all round, so the painted edge of the panel stays visible and the picture appears to float inside the frame rather than sitting against it. A flush mount is already fitted to the back for hanging.
If you would rather choose your own frame, you can buy it unframed. For advice please refer to How to Frame a Painting on a Panel.
Britain’s Smallest Bird
The goldcrest is Europe’s tiniest bird, weighing just 5-7 grams – about the same as a teaspoon of sugar. Despite their fragility, these remarkable little birds migrate thousands of miles each year and can survive brutal winters that would kill much larger species. Their high-pitched call is so faint that many people walk right past them without noticing, but once you learn to spot them, you’ll realize they’re everywhere in Sheffield’s parks and gardens, and across the UK.
Capturing Constant Motion
It took me months to get a goldcrest photograph clear enough to paint from. Goldcrests are perpetual motion incarnate, bouncing frantically from branch to branch, rarely pausing for more than a fraction of a second as they hunt for tiny insects and spiders. I finally caught this one during a brief moment of stillness in Sheffield’s Grave’s Park, perched near the base of a tree trunk with its distinctive golden crest catching the golden winter afternoon light.
The Painting Process
Working in my Sheffield home studio, I created this piece over a single painting session using oils on a 6×6 inch Ampersand Gessobord panel. The compact size suits the subject perfectly – goldcrests are so tiny that even at life-size representation, they barely fill a small panel. I used earth tones and soft greens to capture the subtle, natural coloring of the bird and its preferred coniferous habitat.
The challenge was balancing detail with atmosphere. Too much precision and the painting would feel static; too loose and I’d lose the delicate character of this minuscule bird. I built up the form of the feathers working from dark to light, paying particular attention to the distinctive golden-yellow crest stripe that gives the species its name. The background remains intentionally soft and textured, suggesting dense evergreen foliage without competing for attention.
About the Species
Goldcrests are year-round residents throughout Britain, though you’re most likely to spot them in winter when they join mixed feeding flocks with other small birds. Despite weighing less than a £1 coin, they’re incredibly resilient. During cold nights, they can lower their body temperature and enter a state of torpor to conserve energy – a remarkable adaptation for such a small warm-blooded creature.
Their high-frequency calls are among the first sounds to disappear as we age and lose the ability to hear higher pitches, which means many people gradually stop being able to detect goldcrests even when they’re abundant. If you can still hear them, treasure it – their presence adds a layer of wildlife richness to even urban gardens.
