Description
Britain’s smallest bird
The goldcrest is Britain’s tiniest bird, weighing just 5–7 grams, about the same as a teaspoon of sugar. They migrate thousands of miles each year and can survive winters that would finish off much larger species. Their call is so high-pitched and faint that many people walk right past them without noticing, but once you learn to spot them, they turn up everywhere in Sheffield’s parks and gardens.
Capturing constant motion
It took me months to get a goldcrest photograph clear enough to paint from. They barely stop moving, working frantically from branch to branch and rarely pausing for more than a fraction of a second as they hunt for insects. I finally caught this one during a brief stillness in Sheffield’s Grave’s Park, perched near the base of a tree trunk with its golden crest lit by the winter afternoon light.
If you prefer the original painting, it’s still available here.
