Teachers of a Self-Guided Artist: Adam Clague

This is the tenth in a series of portraits called Teachers of a Self-Guided Artist. Check out the intro post The Self-Taught Myth to read more about it.

This post is about one of my most recent teachers, as Adam’s course was only released in October 2019 (in fact the second part of the course is not yet available). I had followed Adam on Instagram for a while and I love the feeling of his paintings with their combination of realism and loose brushwork, so I was excited when his online portrait painting course was finally released.

Who is Adam Clague?

Adam trained at Pensacola Christian College, where he earned a Masters degree in Fine Arts. His oil paintings have received international awards and press.

Learning from Adam

Adam’s portrait painting course is a combination of text and over 4 hours of video, with the video segments covering the entire process of him painting his Uncle Larry’s portrait.

The painting process is clearly explained and very logical, with a step-by-step method you can follow, covering drawing, values, edges, colour, and temperature. Adam explains his thought process at every stage, and shows the exact colours he mixes on his palette, as well as providing further exercises at the end of each unit.

Highlights include the 4 actions for accurate proportions, a trick for seeing values correctly, rounding forms using temperature, and how to mix colour accurately. He also covers what to do if your painting has dried before you’ve finished it.

I really enjoyed Adam’s online portrait painting course, and learnt a lot from watching how he paints. I haven’t upgraded to the full course yet, which is coming this year and covers painting the figure and more advanced methods, but I’m sure I won’t be able to resist once it’s available.

Thank you, Adam, for teaching me how you communicate beauty in a painting.
