I can’t exactly remember why, but around the end of 2013, having always been obsessed with portraits and figures, I suddenly started taking an interest in landscape painting. The trouble was I had never done it before, so it was very much a trial and error process until I came across a website called Live Painting Lessons (now My Painting Club), which offered access to a lot of landscape painting demonstration videos by New Zealand artist Richard Robinson.
Who is Richard Robinson?
Richard Robinson is a graphic designer turned painter, best known for his beautiful plein air landscape paintings. He is also a dedicated teacher, conducting workshops throughout the world as well as his online demonstration videos.
Learning from Richard
Richard’s demo videos are available individually, as inexpensive downloads, which is how I got started. But once I’d watched one I was hooked, and started buying the bundles of 4 workshops and making my way through each one, painting along as Richard explained every step of the process.
These aren’t like some demos I’ve seen where the artist paints away without really explaining what they are doing. Richard paints quickly, but he explains every decision he makes, and he often has his palette right next to the canvas so you can see every colour he mixes.
He also has bundles of videos arranged into categories with similar themes, such as loose brushwork, birds, flowers, sunsets etc. Click the image below to check out his free video on avoiding muddy colour.
Or if you prefer, you can sign up for a monthly subscription (with a 7 day free trial), that gives you access to all the videos. With this option you can also participate in the monthly group workshop where you’ll have the chance to have your work critiqued by Richard and to be included in either the Australian Artist or International Artist Magazines.
Thank you, Richard, for introducing me to the joy of landscape painting, and helping reduce the amount of error in my trial and error journey!
