On holiday in Portugal a couple of years ago, strolling along the waterfront in the sleepy fishing village of Fuzeta, we came upon a group of people practicing Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art that combines music, dancing and acrobatics.

It was amazing to stand and watch the rhythm of the ‘Capoeiristas’ as they spun and cartwheeled, getting very close, but never actually making contact with each other.

There was a circle of people around the participants, playing music, but I chose to leave them out of the painting and focus on the performers themselves.

It was a challenge, and I had to repaint the figure on the right at one point, but I think it turned out ok in the end.
